TOHOKU UNIVERSITY:

Tohoku University is the third oldest Imperial university in Japan and is considered one of the most prestigious in the country. It was originally founded as a medical school in 1736.

It is located in Sendai, the second largest city north of Tokyo. Throughout its history as an Imperial university it has committed to ‘open doors’ policies, and was the very first university in Japan to accept women, and the first to admit foreign students.

The university was selected as one of 13 universities in the Global 30 Project to internationalise higher education in the country. As part of the initiative, the university offers international degrees which are taught entirely in English. There are more than 1,500 international students at the university as of 2015, representing 90 different countries and regions. In total there are around 10,000 undergraduates, 4,000 master’s students and 2,600 doctoral students enrolled.

There are three mains programs for undergraduates and one program for graduates

JYPE : Tohoku University Junior Year Program in English

Fields: Science, Engineering, Agricultural studies

The main purpose of this program, Junior Year Program in English (JYPE), is to offer an opportunity for overseas students to take science, engineering, and agriculture courses at Tohoku University (TU), without having to attain the Japanese language proficiency that would be necessary to take the same courses in Japanese.

All lectures available to the JYPE participants are given in English and course credits will be given by the standards for the equivalent courses offered in Japanese.

The core course (required) of this program is the Individual Research Training (IRT) course, where students will research, with the support of research groups to which the students are assigned, in a current topic that is related to their field of studies.

The program also offers courses on Japanese language, culture, and society aimed at promotion of understanding of Japanese language and social customs.

Cultural and intellectual exchange with Japanese students is an integral part of the program. This will be accomplished through class work as well as participation in the various activities of research groups.

The one-year program begins on October 1. Applicants are recommended to take the one-year course, because some classes are designed for a whole year. However, a few students can be admitted to the 6-month course if they wish.
